Rooftop Farming: Styrian climate change experts and gastronomy cooperate successfully
The Smart City Rooftop Farming project by JOANNEUM RESEARCH LIFE - the Centre for Climate, Energy and Society - is literally "on everyone's lips". Here it is clearly demonstrated and researched which new functions urban roofs will assume in the future: The aim is to produce food - locally, seasonally and sustainably - generate electricity and the potential to positively influence the climate in cities.
During a visit to the Rooftop Farming Project on the roof terrace of the 13th floor of the Science Tower Graz, Styrian State Councillor for Science and Tourism Barbara Eibinger-Miedl learned how well the forward-looking concept already works. The cooperation between JR-LIFE and the restaurant Streets, which Franziska Grossauer runs on the opposite side of the street, is exemplary for further projects of this kind that are already being prepared. Up to twice a day and also on weekends, the street chefs harvest salads, vegetables, herbs and soon also fruit and olives, which are then immediately processed in regional and international dishes.
The Smart City Rooftop Farming Project is managed by JR-LIFE in cooperation with and with the support of the following partners and sponsors:
Bellaflora, Biohelp, Gemüsebauverband, Grossauer, JR-Materials, Lias, Landwirtschaftliche Fachschulen, Pessl, Rauch, Sonnenerde, Sanlight, SFL, Tagwerk
